Terrorist Maziotis faces five criminal charges

An Athens prosecutor on Thursday evening read terrorist Nikos Maziotis, arrested Wednesday after a shootout, a series of charges against him and unknown collaborators covering the time he was wanted by police.

A massive file compiled by Greek Police was forwarded to the prosecutor after his arrest in central Athens that includes five criminal charges and a series of misdemeanours.

Charges read to him include, among others, repeated attempted manslaughter alone and with collaboration by others; illegal firearm possession; violations related to explosives; holdups while in disguise, one of which resulted in grievous bodily injury; participation in a criminal organisation; stealing of and falsification of official documents; and arson.

The case file will be assigned to an examining magistrate, who will call Maziotis, currently hospitalised, to testify.

Maziotis had been charged in April 2010 with participating in the terrorist organization "Revolutionary Struggle" and given a 50-year jail sentence; he disappeared in 2012 after violating his conditional release along with his wife, Panagiota Roupa, who is still at large.

On Wednesday's shootout, he fired at least eight shots with an 9mm USP pistol in central Athens' Monastiraki district. He was captured after a single shot by the police wounded him seriously. A policeman and two tourists were lightly injured during the incident.
