Dear Martin,
We have been together all the way through an inspiring common struggle to change Europe.
We were next to you in Paris when you launched your grassroots elections’ campaign in front of 1,600 activists, seeking to be “the first EC President who is not the result of a backroom deal in a Brussels office, but the result of a democratic vote, the choice of the European Peoples”. We joined our forces in Rome during our Electoral Congress to support our PES Manifesto as the only viable solution for a progressive Europe and you as the only candidate who could make it true. We were together in your Athens’ speech to encourage the unity of the Greek social democrats. And then, we spread your words and our values in every corner of Greece, by creating 7 PES activist City Groups in less than 3 months to fight for your election.
We did all that because we deeply believe in your vision for an Alternative Democratic Europe, your talent and your determination to realise the Jacques Delor’s triangle: “competition that stimulates, cooperation that strengthens and solidarity that unites”.
Greece is living historical moments, while it never stopped getting through a very hard time.
It is a historic “debt” of all Socialists and Democrats, all progressive powers and the European Parliament as the collective voice of all Europeans to support the Greek People and make sure that its massive sacrifices would be respected.
It is high time to shift the austerity deadlock and enhance growth, social cohesion and democratic reforms that bring us closer. This should happen with stable but decisive steps forward, with institutional solidarity and within the European framework. The solution will be European or will not exist. In this vein, we are quite worried that the newly elected Greek Government, to which we express all our positive thinking and best wishes for success, is a coalition of a radical left power, member-party of GUE, and an openly anti-european, conspiracy-theory right wing party, for which Le Pen has said that is “her favourite one” in Greece. We can’t see why the big winner of the elections, the radical left, is not cooperating with other democratic powers to implement a progressive agenda, but prefers right-wing extremists in the name of anti-austerity. A first sign of this weird coalition is the totally unacceptable and paradox statements regarding the Ukrainian crisis.
Recent developments in Greece, France, Spain and all around Europe lead to a fundamental conclusion. Social-democracy is unable to succeed into a nationally fragmented and socially polarized environment. Europe has suffered a lot from the self-contained populisms of the North and the South. We are one Europe. And the heart of Europe is necessarily Social-democratic. That’s why unity and sincere solidarity to our members is a conditio sine qua non of our existence. Disintegrating conservatism and punitive protestantic obsessions inevitably produce extremism and irrationality, the most hostile environment for democratic and European values. We urgently need a regenerated European big narrative, a Social-democratic New Deal, a common progressive agenda of groundbreaking changes. If we fail, Socialists and Democrats will face a “game over”. And the European project will collapse, trapped into the ghosts of a paralyzing internal conflict, of extremism and fascism.
A necessary precondition to avoid fragmentation is to trust and support our social-democratic comrades in each member-state, pursuant to values and not just numbers. To bring all socialists under one common voice to fight a common struggle through common political structures.
PASOK, the party-member of PES, despite its several mistakes and the wear of power syndrome, has paid disproportionate costs in its efforts to tackle the Greek sovereign debt crisis. The results of the last elections and the subsequent centrifugation of political life should not make us, the Socialists and Democrats forget its crucial role in the long road towards the assurance of Greece's position within the Eurozone. Respecting our history and defending our values is the only way to seek an optimistic progressive “re-start.”
Martin, we address you as the President of the European Parliament and the natural leader of all Socialists and Democrats in Europe. We ask you to assist in the tough but imperative effort to re-unite and revitalise the heavily wounded Social-democracy in Greece and create a universal aim for all social-democrats in Europe. It is our time to be heard. Cause Greece’s future is dark without a reborn, powerful centre-left. And the European dream may turn to a nightmare without a united and solid progressive alliance.
We will be next to you in the future fights of our generation, trusting you will not let us down.
Yours in solidarity,

PES Activists Greece
